Indian weddings are incomplete without music, from energetic baraats and sangeet nights to after-parties and DJ sets. But in recent years, music licensing at weddings has become one of the most debated topics in the event industry. Hotels, banquet venues, DJs, and wedding planners are increasingly asking couples to obtain licenses from agencies like PPL, Novex, RMPL, and IPRS before playing Bollywood or commercial music.
The confusion grew further after multiple legal notices, changing industry practices, and evolving interpretations of copyright law in India. While the Copyright Act still provides exemptions for marriage-related festivities under Section 52(1)(zb)/(za), many venues continue to insist on licenses for events hosted at commercial properties.
Currently, the key debate revolves around whether wedding functions hosted in hotels, resorts, lawns, or banquet venues qualify as “private social festivities” or “public performances.” Industry bodies such as IPRS maintain that marriage ceremonies and associated festivities are exempt under Indian law, and even provide free NOCs for exempted wedding events.
However, venues and licensing agencies often take a more cautious approach due to ongoing legal disputes and copyright enforcement actions. This has led many luxury hotels and destination wedding venues to mandate music licensing compliance before allowing DJs or live performances. Discussions across the wedding industry reveal that costs can range from a few thousand rupees to several lakhs depending on guest count, venue scale, and music catalogue usage.

Key Points
Another major development is the launch of “Sangeet Dwar,” a unified music licensing platform introduced by IPRS, PPL, Novex, and RMPL. The portal aims to simplify music licensing for weddings, events, corporates, and hospitality venues through a single-window system.
For couples and planners, the safest approach today is:
Clarify with the venue whether music licenses are already covered.
Check if the wedding qualifies for exemption under current copyright provisions.
Understand which agency controls the music catalogue being used.
Ensure DJs and entertainment vendors are aligned on compliance responsibilities.

As the legal landscape continues to evolve, music licensing is becoming an important checklist item in wedding planning — especially for luxury, destination, and large-scale celebrations. The focus is no longer just on décor and entertainment, but also on ensuring a seamless, interruption-free celebration.
