As far back as 1488 AD, creative industries sprung from a state smothered in sand. In Bikaner, a city founded in the North West part of Rajasthan by Rao Bika Ji, awe-invoking palaces, intricately scultpured temples and other fine remnants of the Rajput civilization, defied the remainder of its barren, dessert makeup. To this vibrant land of culture, crafts and Indian royalty was born Ramswaroop J Soni, a karigar (artisan) who worked many years breathing fire, colour, shape and design into the iconic Vilandi jewellery of Bikaner, a finery popularised by the kings and queens of Rajasthan. As with the royalty of the region, Vilandi, an Intricate craft dealing in carefully cut, shaped and polished multicoloured precious stones set in gold and enamel, has a historic aura associated with it.
